Each year, more than 200 million surgeries are performed around the world. Despite improvements in peri-operative care, rates of surgery-related complications remain high and these complications create ripple effects for patients, caregivers, health professionals and the health system.  There is room for improvement in how we assess and manage risk before, during and after surgeries. McMaster’s PJ Devereaux shared his insights on this topic, and the lessons learned from his experience and a recent stakeholder dialogue on this important issue.
