Understanding how to navigate the health system
Knowing how your health system works will better you to navigate the system, identify opportunities to make things better, and advocate for changes that you’d like to see. This free online course describes the 'building blocks' of Ontario’s health system as well as how those building blocks are used to provide care in the province in different ways (e.g., by sector, condition, treatment, population). While Ontario is the example, these principles are useful to understanding health systems other jurisdictions in Canada and internationally.

Masterclass on patient-oriented research
The Forum’s masterclass was designed to prepare future champions for the conduct and use of patient-oriented research and future mentors to others becoming involved in the conduct and use of patient-oriented research. While we are not currently planning any sessions for the masterclass on patient-oriented research, you can access all of the course material to learn more about patient-oriented research.
Engaging Ontario patient partners in research: McMaster Health Forum and the Ontario SPOR SUPPORT Unit offer online masterclass
Unique training open to patient partners, health providers, policymakers and managers, and researchers and research trainees
Are you a patient partner interested in understanding how to engage in health research, get an introduction to the research world and more? Are you a researcher or health provider interested in better understanding the value of patient engagement in research and the ‘how to’ of patient-oriented research? Are you a policymaker or manager looking to understand how patient-oriented research can improve the patient experience and patient outcomes?
For those passionate about making a difference in how the health system works for patients, Dr. John Lavis and other experts from the McMaster Health Forum and its collaborators are helping to prepare future champions to support the conduct and use of patient-oriented research in Ontario’s health system through a free, online masterclass. This is a unique opportunity for patient partners, health providers, policymakers and managers, and researchers and research trainees to help bring a strong patient voice to both research and decision-making.

- 6 January 2020 to 23 March 2020 (sessions on Mondays and Thursdays, 12:00pm to 1:00pm)
Over 11 weeks, this virtual course will better prepare participants to support the conduct and use patient-oriented research in Ontario’s health system and become mentors to others looking to do the same.

The form includes participation considerations and instructions for how and where to submit. Selected nominees will receive an invitation to participate.
