Transportation infrastructure is fundamental to the way communities and economies function by ensuring that people can reach necessary destinations including jobs, schools, and grocery stores. While public transportation is critical to vibrant communities, the location of infrastructure for it can be contentious for the surrounding neighbourhoods. In this rapid synthesis, we examine evidence related to: the importance of transit to communities and large cities; the health, social and economic trade-offs of above-ground versus below-ground mass transit systems; the importance of multi-purpose built environment for community health and prosperity; and methods to evaluate transportation projects.
