Preventing and Managing Infectious Diseases Among People who Inject Drugs in Ontario

Injection drug use (IDU) has emerged as not only a pressing issue in Ontario given the spike in the overdose rate, but also as a highly complex issue, given the need for coordinated responses. In addition to the urgent need to prevent overdoses, IDU poses significant risk for infectious disease. This points to a need for a person-centred approach across health and social systems (i.e., cross-sectoral, collaborative and interdisciplinary) to support the prevention and coordinated treatment of infectious diseases.
